Weapons of Mass Destruction

The Non-Proliferation of (nuclear, biological and chemical) weapons of mass destruction is essential to international peacekeeping. The enormous destructive force of these weapons and the consequences of their use on civilians make non-proliferation a global challenge which the international community needs to face.

Resolution 1540(2004) of the United Nations Security Council obliges Austria, as all other United Nations member States, to take effective measures to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, inter alia to non-State actors. A summary of Austrian implementation measures is compiled in this Matrix

On the European level, Austria is actively involved in the implementation of the Strategy of the European Union against the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.
